The traditional construction process in Finland is to build the sauna first so that people can wash, heat and sleep in it while they build the main house. In essence, the sauna fulfills all basic needs and is therefore a social and functional space in Finnish culture. Therefore, the design of Sauna Kannus was an integral part of the Villa Kannus design. Sauna Kannus features a large patio that is both open to the seaside and sky, yet shielded from the back and the sides at the same time. This design allows its users to privately take in the beautiful sea view from the inside of the sauna without feeling too closed off from nature. In addition, the hole in the roofing encourages users to not only look out, but also up as well.
