Nomad

Galerie Maria Wettergren, 1994

During his studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, Ilkka Suppanen needed to frequently move from one accommodation to another. Therefore, Suppanen designed a chair that was light enough to transport from place to place with ease. The first Nomad prototype was the actual chair that Suppanen used while studying in Amsterdam. He later brought this chair back to Helsinki and continued to refine the design until it evolved into its current form. A light, flexible structure, Nomad embodies a gentle and soothing rocking movement within its form. Its seat is shaped from thick felt and its frame is built from spring steel. Nomad was eventually produced as a limited edition series.

Years later, Flying Carpet was a sofa that evolved from the work on Nomad.
