Dream
Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki, 2012
A venerable natural resource in society, glass is visually stunning no matter its shape. Broken glass can be just as beautiful as unshattered, intact glass. However, what is unique to broken glass is that it can be melted and fused together again multiple times. One single piece of glass can be in a perpetual cycle of change for centuries, connecting different materials and human relationships throughout the process.
For Ilkka Suppanen, this aspect of glass makes a profound statement on how we should be living. Demonstrating this thought, the exhibition entitled “Broken” contained installations of sculptural objects that were crafted together from broken pieces of Murano glass. The diverse textures inherent in these installations amplified the reflection of light at different angles, creating powerful and timeless visual impressions on the visitors.
